US cuts refugee intake, gives priority to white South Africans

Trump administration slashes US refugee cap to 7,500 for 2026—down from Biden’s 125,000—and reserves most spots for white South African Afrikaners.

The White House cites discrimination, land seizures, and racial violence against Afrikaners under South Africa’s Black-led government, allegations dismissed by Pretoria as “completely false.”

Around 400 Afrikaners have already been resettled via a fast-track program launched this year. Critics call it racially driven, arguing it overlooks other worldwide crises.

Afrikaners, who once enforced apartheid, now comprise under 5% of South Africa’s population but remain prominent in society.

Trump’s executive order accuses South Africa of human rights abuses and directs agencies to prioritize Afrikaner relocation, sparking fresh debate on race, refugees, and US migration policy.
