Ghana’s creative arts community is mourning the loss of veteran actor and cultural icon Mr. William Addo, popularly known by his stage name Akpatse, who passed away peacefully on 22nd November 2025 after years of battling severe health complications.
Mr. Addo’s illustrious career spanned several decades, earning him national recognition as an actor, lecturer, director, and cultural advocate.
He became a household name through his unforgettable performances on GTV’s Thursday Theatre and numerous stage and screen productions, where his distinct comedic flair and memorable character portrayals endeared him to audiences across the country.
A scholar of the arts, Mr. Addo studied Drama and Theatre Studies at the University of Ghana and later obtained a Master’s degree in Acting and Directing from the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom.
His contributions extended beyond performance; he held key leadership roles including Director at the National Theatre and Director of Programmes at the National Commission on Culture.
He also lectured at the University of Ghana’s Theatre Arts Department, where he mentored generations of actors and creatives who today form the backbone of Ghana’s film and theatre industry.
In his later years, Mr. Addo faced significant health challenges, including visual impairment from glaucoma and cataracts.
Despite these difficulties, he remained celebrated for his resilience and his unwavering commitment to the arts.
The family is expected to announce funeral arrangements in due course.
