Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has pledged stronger support from her office to the Ministry of Health in its efforts to deliver accessible and effective healthcare to Ghanaians.
The Vice President, accompanied by her Chief of Staff, Hon. Alex Segbefia, and senior advisors, paid a working visit to the Ministry on Wednesday to engage with the leadership on ongoing reforms and sector priorities.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang assured Health Minister and his team of continuous collaboration, guidance, and strategic input from her office to enhance the sector’s performance.
The Minister highlighted key progress, including the recruitment of more than 7,000 health professionals, the uncapping of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to increase funding, the rollout of a digital application platform for nursing trainees, the introduction of the “No Fees Stress Policy” to ease financial burdens on nursing students, improved management of outbreaks such as cholera and meningitis, and the launch of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (MahamaCares) with a dedicated secretariat.
Despite these achievements, the Ministry acknowledged persistent challenges: rising unemployment among health professionals, limited specialist training programmes, inadequate retooling of health facilities, and weak support for the local pharmaceutical industry.
Responding to these concerns, the Vice President outlined proposed interventions.
These include leveraging opportunities for exporting health professionals while safeguarding their welfare, scaling up specialist training, training hospital technicians for equipment maintenance, and intensifying public health education campaigns in partnership with state agencies and the media.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang commended the Ministry for its initiatives and reaffirmed government’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery.
She emphasized the need for sustained dialogue between her office and the Ministry to address the challenges and deliver lasting reforms for a stronger, more responsive health system.
