Ghana’s Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has reaffirmed government’s commitment to advancing policies that promote the welfare and empowerment of women and girls, particularly in education, health, and economic participation.
Delivering a message on her behalf at the “Women in Gospel Music (WIGM) Gratitude 2025” Celebration, the Vice President’s Press Secretary and Spokesperson, Maame Ama Pratt, commended the group’s initiative to support schoolgirls with sanitary towels, describing it as “a timely and life-changing act of compassion.”
She noted that menstrual hygiene remains a major barrier to girls’ education in rural Ghana, where many students miss school due to lack of sanitary pads and inadequate sanitation facilities.
“About one in four girls in rural northern communities miss school during their menstrual periods, leading to significant learning losses and decreased confidence,” she stated.

Ms. Pratt emphasized that the Women in Gospel Music initiative directly complements national efforts under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, who continues to champion programs that enhance the dignity, education, and well-being of women and girls.
“This initiative aligns perfectly with government’s ongoing policies aimed at empowering girls and ensuring that no child is left behind because of gender-related challenges,” she added.
On behalf of the Vice President, Ms. Pratt expressed appreciation to the leadership of Women in Gospel Music, led by President Abena Ruthy and Rev. Dr. Mary Ghansah, for using their platform to advance social impact beyond music. She encouraged members to continue serving as agents of change and hope within their communities.
“Gratitude must inspire us to extend kindness and contribute to national progress,” she urged. “I encourage every woman in gospel music to offer her best to God, remain united, and continue serving humanity.”

WIGM President Abena Ruthy said the group, which has been in existence for 12 years, seeks to mentor and empower young women in music while helping them establish alternative income-generating ventures.
The “Gratitude 2025” celebration, themed “Our God Reigns,” brought together leading women in gospel music to reflect on faith, service, and the power of gratitude to transform lives and communities.
The event featured soul-stirring performances and concluded with donations of sanitary pads for distribution to students in the Ga Central Municipality.
