Weapons, excavators seized in major anti-galamsey operation in Ahafo Ano Southwest

A coordinated anti-galamsey operation was conducted in the Mpasaaso and Achiase communities within the Ahafo Ano Southwest District of the Ashanti Region on Monday, June 2, 2025.

This joint effort, led by the Mankranso District Police Command in collaboration with the Ahafo Ano Southwest District Assembly, aimed to dismantle illegal mining activities in the area.

Upon arrival at the targeted sites, several illegal miners fled, abandoning their equipment and weapons.

The security team seized five heavy excavators, one CAL 9mm pistol loaded with three rounds of live ammunition, four pump-action guns, twelve live BB cartridges, and five live AA cartridges.

The excavators are currently secured at the Ahafo Ano Southwest District Assembly premises, while the firearms and ammunition are in the custody of the Mankranso District Police Command for further investigation.

Authorities suspect that the illegal miners may have had armed protection, highlighting concerns about the involvement of organized criminal networks in illegal mining operations.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has commended all officers and stakeholders involved in the successful operation and urges the public to support law enforcement by providing credible information to aid in the arrest and prosecution of individuals engaged in illegal mining activities.

This operation underscores the ongoing efforts by Ghanaian authorities to combat illegal mining, which poses significant threats to the environment and local communities.
