Former Akwatia MP, Baba Jamal, has cautioned New Juaben South legislator, Michael Okyere Baafi, to stand by his vow to resign from Parliament if the New Patriotic Party (NPP) loses the Akwatia by-election.
Okyere Baafi made the declaration during the one-week observance of the late Akwatia MP, Ernest Kumi, where he accused the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of failing to deliver on its 2024 campaign promises.
“If the NPP loses this Akwatia by-election, I will resign as MP. Mark my words!” he declared.
Speaking to journalists on election day, Baba Jamal insisted the NDC would not allow the NPP lawmaker to renege on that commitment.
“Otherwise we’ll all give him the necessary disdain and disrespect as MP. We’ll show him serious disrespect because we’ll not trust him again. He has come to give his words,” he warned.
The former MP stressed that political credibility was on the line.
“If you come and say you’ll resign, if that’s what he said, I’m telling you we are going to hold him to that. Politics may be full of surprises, but integrity must remain constant,” he added.
The Akwatia by-election has drawn national attention, with the NDC’s Bernard Baidoo and the NPP’s Solomon Asumadu emerging as the key contenders.
A total of 52,328 registered voters are expected to cast their ballots across 119 polling stations, supervised by 484 Electoral Commission officials.
Security has been reinforced, and despite isolated disturbances in the morning, voting has remained largely peaceful and accessible to all, including visually impaired voters.
