Wontumi’s arrest is part of what Ghanaians expect from the NDC Govt — Inusah Fuseini

A former Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Inusah Fuseini has lauded the Mahama administration for going after the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the opposition NPP, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi.

The former legislator for Tamale Central who was reacting to the detention of Wontumi by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) stated that the NPP bigwig committed a lot of crimes against the state with impunity during the previous Akufo-Addo administration.

Wontumi who was invited by the Police CID last Monday and charged for mining without license and other crimes relating to irresponsible mining.

He was later picked up by EOCO operatives and interrogated for other alleged crimes including money laundering and fraud, sparking agitations from his party members including the Minority in Parliament.

Wontumi could not meet the bail requirements of GHS 50 million with 2 sureties– a development that triggered the Minority to assemble at the premises of EOCO on Thursday.

Speaking to the matter on Dwaboase on TV XYZ and Power FM, Mr Fuseini, a private legal practitioner condemned the conduct of the opposition MPs led by the leader, Alexander Afenyo Markin.

He said their actions were “archaic and reckless”, stressing that the laws of the country were simply being enforced.

“The Minority cannot save Wontumi with their protests,” he noted while advising them to resort to the courts for an intervention if they could not provide the sureties.

Asked by Piesie Okrah, the host of the programme, whether or not the government had engaged in political persecution, Inusah Fuseini debunked the assertion of the Minority and stated that Wontumi’s actions under the previous government triggered his arrest under the new government.

“What is happening to Wontumi reflects the expectations of Ghanaians who voted for President John Mahama.”

“We have records that Wontumi entered a forest reserve [in the Western Region] without authorisation and polluted water bodies. What we are witnessing is the enforcement of the laws of the country,” he argued.

Mr Fuseini urged Ghanaians to support the government to execute its mandate since the arrest is one of the reasons the electorates voted for the NDC.
