Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has responded to various interpretations surrounding his recent remarks about Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang potentially becoming Ghana’s first female President.
The Tamale South MP, during the Vice President’s visit to the Ministry of Education, had prayed for long life and good health for her “to one day be elevated to the high office of President.”
“I pray God grants you long life and good health so that you may one day be elevated to become the first female President,” Haruna stated.
His comments, however, sparked a wave of political analysis and speculation, particularly in the context of emerging conversations within the NDC over who might eventually succeed President John Dramani Mahama.
Some political commentators suggested that Haruna Iddrisu’s remarks hinted at his possible interest in partnering Prof. Opoku-Agyemang as a running mate in the 2028 elections.
Others viewed the statement as a strategic move to calm tensions following NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia’s “Thank You Tour,” which had been interpreted by some as a subtle campaign to position himself or others for post-Mahama leadership.
Speaking at the 2025 Ghana Teacher Prize ceremony in Ho, Mr. Iddrisu acknowledged the multiple interpretations but said he had anticipated them.
“Many of you gave my last comment about the Vice President your own interpretation. Yes, I wanted an interpretation,” he said with a smile.
“The Vice President is, irrefutably, a presumption that she can assume the high office of President.”
Mr. Iddrisu emphasized that his statement was not political posturing but a recognition of the constitutional and practical reality that the office of Vice President is inherently a potential pathway to the presidency.
