$350m cocaine seized in Ghana to be destroyed by court order

The Criminal Division of the High Court in Accra has ordered the destruction of over $350 million worth of cocaine seized in Ghana.

The National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) at Pedu Junction in the Central Region intercepted the 3,319.66 kilograms (approximately 3.3 tonnes) of cocaine in March 2025.

The narcotics were concealed under sand in a tipper truck en route to Accra.

On June 4, 2025, samples of the seized substance underwent field-testing at the NIB headquarters in Ridge, Accra.

The Cobalt Thiocyanate test yielded a blue coloration, indicating a presumptive positive result for cocaine.

Subsequent laboratory analyses conducted by the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), including High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), confirmed the substance as cocaine hydrochloride.

The court has scheduled the destruction of the narcotics for June 20, 2025, at Bundase in the Greater Accra Region.

Three individuals truck driver Isaac Quaicoo (39), his mate Kenneth Cobbinah (25), and Mawuku Kudufia are currently on trial at the High Court in Accra.

They face charges including unlawful drug importation and engaging in prohibited narcotics trade.

Additionally, the NIB has declared three more individuals Kelian Julien Mensah, Jefflean Kwadjo Ntow, and Charles Hagan wanted in connection with this case.

This seizure is considered as one of the largest in Ghana’s history and marks a significant milestone in the country’s ongoing efforts to combat narcotics trafficking.
