University of Ghana postpones 2024/2025 academic year over tertiary workers’ strike

The University of Ghana (UG) has suspended the commencement of the 2024/2025 academic year following an ongoing strike by several tertiary employee unions.

This means new students will not be able to start school as freshmen to study just as continuing students.

The Registrar of the school who confirmed the development on Wednesday, September 25, 2024  informed students and stakeholders of the decision.

The university also clarified that special programmes will proceed as planned as while the strike continues.

However, a new start date for the general academic year will be communicated once the situation stabilizes.

The partly closure of the university stems from unresolved disputes between government and key unions, including the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU), the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), and the Federation of University Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG).

These unions have been on an indefinite strike over long-standing demands for improved working conditions.

Their concerns include delayed pension contributions and non-payment of vehicle maintenance allowances.

The unions are also agitating over the suspension of certain allowances whih the government agreed to pay them.
