New internet data offers take effect today as government pushes for better value

Effective today, 1 July 2025, mobile data users across Ghana are set to benefit from significantly enhanced data bundles without any price increase.

This move follows a directive from the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations aimed at delivering better value to consumers.

MTN Ghana, classified as a Significant Market Power, is increasing all its data bundles by 15 percent.

Its popular GH¢399 bundle, previously reduced, has been restored to 214 GB, with similar proportional increases across other plans.

Meanwhile, AT Ghana and Telecel Ghana are implementing a 10 percent boost on all existing bundles.

AT’s GH¢400 package now offers 236 GB, up from 195 GB, while Telecel’s GH¢400 plan has surged from 90 GB to 250 GB, marking a significant increase in value.

These changes are a result of extensive stakeholder consultations led by minister Samuel Nartey George, who described the initiative as delivering immediate consumer relief.

The National Communications Authority (NCA) will begin quarterly billing integrity audits to ensure telecom companies are accurately crediting data as advertised.

In the long term, the government is working with the Ministries of Finance and Energy to reduce sector-specific taxes which currently make up about 39% of data pricing in an effort to lower costs sustainably.

The increase in data volumes without a price hike offers immediate relief to consumers especially students, freelancers, and remote workers.

It also promotes market fairness by curbing pricing disparities among telecom providers, especially addressing concerns tied to MTN’s market dominance.

In the long term, government-led reforms targeting high sector taxes and utility costs aim to make data more affordable on a sustainable basis.
