A joyous naming ceremony in Gbawe Zero, Greater Accra, turned tragic last Thursday when a queenmother, Pearl Naa Dodoowa Whitaker (aged 33), was fatally shot by unknown assailants.
Another woman was also wounded and is currently receiving treatment at the University of Ghana Hospital .
At around 7 p.m. during a naming ceremony in Gbawe Zero, a tragic shooting occurred when celebratory musket fire reportedly masked live gunfire.
Queenmother Pearl Naa Dodoowa Whitaker, recently enstooled and awaiting coronation as Naa Agyinafo I of Papaase, was fatally shot in the head.
Eyewitnesses described a scene of sudden panic as she collapsed. A second woman was also shot reportedly in the shoulder or stomach and is now in stable condition at the University of Ghana Hospital.
Odorkor Divisional Commander ACP Kofi Sarpong confirmed that Chief Nii Ayi Solomon also known as Ibrahim Ayi Kwashie Solomon reported the shooting and is currently assisting police while in custody.
The crime scene has been secured, and forensic teams are actively collecting evidence. Witnesses indicated that gunshots may have been timed to blend with traditional musket fire.
The motive and identity of the shooter remain unknown, with no arrests yet made as investigations continue.
