The Regional Maritime University (RMU) has announced the introduction of a four-year mandatory cadetship programme for all students pursuing sea-going programmes, effective from the 2025/2026 academic year.
The announcement was made by Vice-Chancellor Dr. Jethro W. Brooks Jnr. during the University’s 19th Congregation Ceremony, held at the RMU Parade Square in Accra.
Dr. Brooks explained that the cadetship initiative is aimed at bridging the gap between academic training and industry practice, and ensuring students graduate with practical experience, discipline, and global maritime competencies.
“This initiative is a bold step toward bridging the gap between academic knowledge and industry requirements,” Dr. Brooks said. “It will ensure our students are fully prepared to meet global standards in maritime operations.”
The ceremony saw 372 students graduating from Ghana, Cameroon, Liberia, and The Gambia, underscoring RMU’s regional influence and growing reputation in West and Central Africa.
In his remarks, Dr. Brooks made a strong appeal for infrastructural support from government, private organisations, and maritime stakeholders to help the University meet increasing demand for space and services.
“Our student population continues to grow, and we must match that growth with adequate infrastructure. We are calling on government, organisations, and stakeholders in the maritime industry to support us in constructing new classrooms and hostels,” he said.
He also invited estate developers and private investors to partner with RMU through innovative frameworks such as Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT), Build-and-Jointly-Operate, and other mutually beneficial arrangements to develop student accommodation facilities.
With the launch of the cadetship programme and its continued commitment to excellence, RMU is reinforcing its position as a regional leader in maritime education, focused on innovation, industry alignment, and international collaboration.
