Former General Secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Dr. Anthony Yaw Baah, has been sworn in as the Chairman of the newly constituted Governing Board of the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS).
The seven-member Board is expected to steer the Service toward delivering accurate and reliable national data to inform policy and development planning.
Members of the new GSS Board include:
- Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu – Government Statistician
- Mrs. Nelly Mireku – Director of Research, Ministry of Finance
- Dr. Zakaria Mumuni
- Prof. Mariama Awumbila
- Dr. Philomena Nyarko
- Dr. Paul Kwame Butakor
At the inauguration ceremony in Accra, Deputy Finance Minister, Hon. Thomas Ampem Nyarko, tasked the Board to uphold data integrity and relevance, especially as Ghana navigates complex economic and development challenges.
“Your role is critical. Reliable statistics are the foundation for sound decision-making, and your leadership will help build a stronger national data system,” he noted.
He further pledged the government’s full support for the Board in carrying out its mandate.
Accepting the appointment, Dr. Yaw Baah thanked President John Dramani Mahama and Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson for the opportunity to serve.
“I am deeply honoured by this appointment and fully committed to advancing the GSS’s mission in support of national development,” Dr. Baah stated.
He brings decades of experience in labour policy, institutional leadership, and stakeholder engagement having led the TUC until his retirement in 2023.
The GSS Board is expected to drive reforms in statistical coordination, data quality, and digitalisation, ensuring Ghana’s development agenda is anchored in evidence-based planning and measurable outcomes.
