Mahama commissions modern air navigation system

President John Dramani Mahama today inaugurated Ghana’s ultra-modern Air Navigation Services (ANS) Building at Kotoka International Airport (KIA), marking a pivotal moment in the nation’s aviation infrastructure transformation.

Alongside the commissioning, he launched the Advanced Passenger Information (API) and Passenger Name Record (PNR) systems aimed at digitizing air travel security and gateway operations.

President John Mahama has commissioned the newly completed Air Navigation Services (ANS) Building, which will function as Ghana’s key operational hub for managing aviation services such as air traffic control, surveillance, aeronautical information, and meteorological data.

The facility also hosts the Multi Agency Command Centre (MACC), enabling real-time coordination among security and border agencies, including INTERPOL, the Ghana Police, and the Armed Forces.

In his remarks, Mahama positioned the development as a critical step toward making Ghana the aviation hub of West Africa, highlighting the nation’s track record in safety and regulatory oversight.

He emphasized that airspace management and digital integration form the “invisible backbone” of safe and efficient air travel.

Ghana also launched its API/PNR systems, internationally recognized tools that strengthen border and immigration controls by allowing for pre-screening of travelers and cargo.

This aligns Ghana with global aviation security standards and supports faster, safer passenger processing.

Mahama directed that these systems be integrated into e-Visa and e-Gate operations across all air, land, and sea entry points.

Looking ahead, the government plans to expand the digital infrastructure to other terminals, including the new Kumasi and Tamale international airports, and complete the nationwide rollout of the e-Visa platform, reinforcing Ghana’s ambition to lead in aviation innovation and regional connectivity.

By commissioning the new ANS building and launching the API/PNR systems, President Mahama has positioned Ghana at the forefront of aviation modernization in West Africa.

This initiative combines advanced air navigation infrastructure with digitized border management, enhancing safety, operational efficiency, and Ghana’s global competitiveness in travel and trade.
