The National Lottery Authority (NLA) has unveiled a new sticker registration system designed to sanitize the lottery industry and curb the activities of illegal operators.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra, Mr. Mohammed Abdul-Salam, Director-General of the NLA, announced that effective September 1 2025, all lotto writers across the country will be required to register and obtain official NLA stickers before operating.
He explained that the initiative forms part of broader reforms to protect the integrity of the lottery business, safeguard state revenue, and curb the growing menace of unregulated banka-to-banka operations.
“This reform is not intended to stifle trade, but rather to streamline operations, restore public confidence, and protect both operators and players in the industry,” Mr. Abdul-Salam said.
The NLA boss warned that strict enforcement measures would be applied, urging operators and their associations to comply fully in order to avoid sanctions.
Providing further details, the Executive Secretary of the Concerned Lotto Agents Association of Ghana (CLAAG), Mr. Eric Kweku Duah-Tawiah, disclosed that each sticker will cost GH₵250 per agent, with flexible payment arrangements available to ease the burden on operators.
He noted that registration is annual, requiring operators to renew their stickers every year to remain compliant with NLA regulations.
The NLA believes the sticker system will help flush out unlicensed operators, boost compliance, and ensure that proceeds from the industry contribute meaningfully to national development.
