Ghana to become a construction site – Mahama urges motorists to comply with diversions as he launches big push initiative

President John Mahama has said Ghana will soon resemble a massive construction site following the rollout of government’s flagship infrastructure programme, The Big Push.

He explained that the scale of the initiative will see simultaneous road and infrastructure works across the country.

While acknowledging the likely inconveniences to motorists, he urged the public to cooperate with diversions and safety signs.

“The whole of Ghana is going to become a construction site. When you’re driving, there will be some inconvenience because of the roadworks, but let’s bear it, knowing that we are suffering to gain,” President Mahama said.

“If contractors put road signs that we must follow, let’s not get irritated. I apologize in advance to Ghanaians.” He added.

The President added that contracts were deliberately divided into shorter stretches to allow quicker completion and minimize disruptions. “No contractor has been given too long a stretch. We’ve broken it into pieces so each can work quickly, and then the portions are joined together,” he emphasized.

Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony for the 176.4-kilometre Atimpoku–Aflao road at Titrinu in the Volta Region, President Mahama also appealed to First Sky Construction Limited, the contractor, to recruit young Ghanaian graduates in engineering and related fields to strengthen local industry capacity.

“There are many young, enterprising Ghanaians, civil, mechanical, and electrical engineers, who are sitting at home without jobs. Please open up your recruitment and take these young people on,” he urged.

The Big Push is a USD 10 billion government initiative, to be disbursed annually over five years, aimed at upgrading infrastructure nationwide.
