The Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has strongly condemned the rising incidents of inappropriate sexual relationships between teachers and students in second-cycle institutions, describing the trend as unacceptable and disgraceful to the teaching profession.
Her comments follow the circulation of a viral video allegedly involving the headmaster of KNUST Senior High School and a female student in a compromising situation.
Speaking at the 2025 Ghana Teacher Prize Ceremony at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) in Ho on Sunday, October 5, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang stressed that teachers occupy a position of trust and must uphold the highest moral and professional standards.
“Leadership cannot ignore those teachers in positions of power who abuse our young pupils,” she said.
“The recent event involving one of our teachers in a management position is a case in point. As teachers, we must always remember that we are placed in a position of trust, protection, and empathy. The power given to us is to facilitate learning. We will not hesitate to apply sanctions to those who violate that trust.” She stated.
The Vice President cautioned that transferring offending teachers should never be considered a form of punishment, emphasizing the need for accountability and deterrence.
“Remember, transfers are not punishment, and they should never be used against those who abuse our children, betray their trust, and disgrace our profession,” she added.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang also announced plans by the government to revive Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) across schools to enhance collaboration between educators and parents in safeguarding and shaping young learners.
She further noted that the government would strengthen collaboration with the National Teaching Council (NTC) to raise teaching standards nationwide and promote professional ethics in the education sector.
“The government has also decided to revive PTAs to encourage broader participation in forming our young learners,” she said.
The Vice President concluded by encouraging teachers to embrace mentorship and lifelong learning as vital components of their professional growth and national development.
