Kwesi Pratt Jnr urges African leaders to pursue a continental monetary system

Pan-Africanist Kwesi Pratt Jnr has called on African leaders to establish and adopt a unified continental monetary system free from foreign influence.

Delivering his closing remarks at the 5th Commemoration of the Pan-African Progressive Front Forum in Ghana, Mr. Pratt said Africa must no longer rely on economic systems shaped by external powers.

He argued that true development will remain elusive unless the continent takes full control of its political and economic destiny.

Mr. Pratt described current monetary arrangements in parts of Africa as remnants of “lingering colonial domination,” stressing the urgent need for structural reforms that enhance self-determination.

He also urged African leaders to invest in developing a robust military-industrial base to counter persistent neo-colonial pressures and strengthen the continent’s bargaining power on the global stage.

Other speakers at the event echoed his sentiments, appealing to African leaders to prioritise economic sovereignty as the foundation for genuine continental independence.
