Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has engaged members of the Ghanaian community in Rwanda, listening to their concerns and outlining measures being undertaken by the government to improve the lives of Ghanaians.
Speaking at the engagement, the Vice President said the government’s development agenda was focused on ensuring that the benefits of national development reached the majority of citizens, rather than being concentrated among those already at the top.
On the economy, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang acknowledged the difficult economic conditions inherited by the government, including high inflation, pressure on the currency and significant debt challenges.
She said government was working to stabilize the economy, reduce debt and redirect public resources towards critical areas such as roads, hospitals and schools.
On health, she said preventive healthcare must receive greater attention, particularly in the management of chronic conditions. She also stressed the need to equip hospitals with the necessary facilities and equipment to improve healthcare delivery.
On education, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said government was addressing challenges across the education sector, including improving infrastructure in primary schools and providing students with science and vocational equipment.
She emphasized the importance of creating welcoming and conducive learning environments, noting that poor school infrastructure could discourage children from attending school and affect their educational progress.
The Vice President also called for greater diversification of secondary education, with increased recognition of technical and vocational skills to enable young people to pursue educational and career paths that match their interests and abilities.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang also encouraged Ghanaians living abroad to register with Ghanaian diplomatic missions to enable government to keep track of its citizens and better understand their needs.
She noted that Ghanaians were widely dispersed across the world but remained an important part of the country regardless of where they lived.
Ghana’s High Commissioner to Rwanda His Excellency Ernest Yaw Amporful reaffirmed government’s commitment to the welfare of Ghanaians abroad and recognized the valuable contribution of the Ghanaian diaspora to national development.
He commended the Ghanaian community in Rwanda for maintaining a positive image of Ghana and contributing to Rwanda’s development through professional work, businesses, entrepreneurship, education and community activities.
Ambassador Ampofo also underscored the importance of maintaining strong ties between Ghana and its citizens abroad.
He said the mission remained committed to providing consular assistance, safeguarding Ghanaian interests and strengthening relations between the Ghanaian community and Rwandan authorities.
The President of the Ghanaian Community in Rwanda, Mr. Samuel Abban, expressed gratitude to the Vice President for taking time to meet Ghanaians living in Rwanda and engage with them on their experiences, concerns and aspirations.
He commended Ghana’s High Commissioner for his continued support to the Ghanaian community, particularly his open-door policy and willingness to listen to members and provide guidance when needed.
Mr. Abban urged members of the community to continue upholding Ghana’s reputation abroad while strengthening the longstanding bonds of friendship between Ghana and Rwanda.
