The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has urged girls in Junior High Schools (JHS) across the country to take Information and Communication Technology (ICT) education seriously and consider careers in the technology sector.
According to the Minister, the rapid growth of technology has made digital skills essential for education, employment, entrepreneurship and national development.
Speaking at the 2026 Girls in ICT programme, Mr George encouraged young girls to take advantage of opportunities in ICT and develop the skills required to compete in an increasingly digital world.
He said the Girls in ICT initiative is designed to expose girls at the basic education level to technology and equip them with practical digital skills that can support their future careers.
The Minister noted that ICT is no longer an optional skill, as technology has become an integral part of almost every aspect of modern life. He therefore encouraged the girls to develop an interest in areas such as coding, software development, digital entrepreneurship, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies.
Mr George also urged parents, teachers and school authorities to encourage more girls to pursue ICT-related education and careers, stressing that the technology sector presents significant opportunities for young people.
He said increasing the participation of girls in ICT would not only benefit the individual beneficiaries but also contribute to building a stronger and more inclusive digital economy.
The Minister further called on the beneficiaries of the programme to remain committed to learning, practise the skills they acquire and use technology responsibly to create solutions to challenges within their communities.
He reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to supporting initiatives that bridge the digital gender gap and equip young people with the skills needed to participate meaningfully in Ghana’s digital transformation.
The Girls in ICT programme forms part of broader efforts to encourage more girls to develop an interest in technology and pursue careers in the digital sector.
