Former President John Dramani Mahama has again bemoaned government’s neglect of the victims of the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election violence, despite recommendation of the Commission of Enquiry.
John Mahama who is also the 2024 flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, NDC described the development, five years on, as sad, unacceptable and a reflection of mindset of those behind the state sponsored attacks on innocent Ghanaians that fateful day, January 31, 2019.
Mr Mahama was speaking during a brief visit to one of the victims, Isshau Yaro as part of his Easter Monday visitations in the Greater Accra Region.
Describing Mr. Isshau as a once energetic and hardworking individual, Mr Mahama noted with concern how he had been left invalid and unable to pursue his former livelihood due to the events in Ayawaso West Wuogon.
“This is Isshau Yaro. He was a very energetic, active, and hardworking young man. Today, because of what happened at Ayawaso West Wuogon, he’s become invalid; he’s unable to do the work he used to do’ – he lamented.
Mr Mahama subsequently called on the President, Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo and his Vice, Dr Mahamadu Bawumia to appreciate the urgent need for justice for him and others affected.
He emphasized…… “Isshau is waiting for justice. Up until today, no compensation has been paid to him, and that is what I have said: that there are casualties who are still suffering the effects and the scars of Ayawaso West Wuogon”
He added .. “I call on them, the president and vice president, to have sympathy for this young man and pay the compensation that will also allow him to put his life back on track.”
The NDC flagbearer however assured Isshau Yaro and other victims that, if God willing, NDC wins the 2024 elections, he will be one of our heroes, and his next government will give him adequate compensation to put his life back on track.
