Ashanti Regional Minister Warns Against Streetlight Theft

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has issued a firm warning to individuals engaged in the theft of streetlights and their components, vowing to take decisive action against offenders.

His strong stance follows growing concerns over the rampant vandalism and theft of street lighting infrastructure, which has left several streets in Kumasi and other parts of the Ashanti Region in darkness, compromising security and road safety.

Dr. Amoakohene made these remarks while speaking to journalists after inspecting major roads in Kumasi to assess malfunctioning streetlights.

Accompanied by key security officials and representatives from the Department of Urban Roads and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), the tour aimed to identify affected areas and develop strategies to restore proper lighting.

The region has seen a rise in the theft of streetlight components, particularly electrical cables and bulbs. These incidents, often occurring under the cover of darkness, have created hazardous conditions for both pedestrians and motorists, increasing the risk of accidents and crime.

Dr. Amoakohene condemned the situation, emphasizing that such thefts not only disrupt urban infrastructure but also place a financial strain on the government, which must repeatedly allocate resources for repairs and replacements.

He also revealed that the issue has been thoroughly discussed at the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), and authorities are implementing strategic measures to apprehend culprits.

“We are determined to put an end to this menace. We repair the streetlights, only for criminals to return and steal the cables—especially the copper ones, which are highly targeted. While we are exploring alternatives like aluminum wiring, we are also committed to making an example of perpetrators.

“Once we apprehend and prosecute offenders, it will send a clear message that the laws of Ghana are in full force and that our security agencies are proactive in maintaining order.”
