The Western Central Regional Police Command has arrested the Assembly Member for the Tarkwa Bremang Electoral Area, Isaac Duku, also known as Agoogi, for engaging in illegal mining and unlawfully diverting a public road onto his private land.
Police say the arrest, which took place on 19th July 2025 at Dortaso near Tarkwa, followed a report lodged by residents at the Bawdie Police Station on 14th July 2025 in the Amenfi East Municipality in the Western Region.
Police statement indicate that the suspect had diverted the main community access road without authorisation and was conducting illegal mining operations on the diverted stretch in the area.
The suspect is currently assisting investigations.
This is one of the numerous arrests the Police have made in relation to illegal mining activities that have destroyed most of Ghana’s water bodies and forest reserves mostly in the Ashanti, Western, Western North, Central and Ashanti Regions.
Apart from recent arrests made by the Police, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has waged war on illegal mining activities popularly known as galamsey.
Last month, the IGP ordered a series of raids on illegal mining towns notorious for galamsey activities some of which were done in settlements and close to major highways in the Western, Ashanti and Central regions.
During these operations by the police, 38 suspects were arrested in separate raids at Wassa Dadieso, Wassa Gyapa, Akrokerri, Diaso and Huniso near Tarkwa.
One police operation was conducted at Huniso near Tarkwa in the Western region.
13 suspects were arrested and have since been remanded by the Tarkwa Circuit court to reappear on 6th June.
Police also raided another illegal mining operation inside settlements at Akrokerri close to Obuasi in the Ashanti region.
They were engaged in blasting using explosives, destroying the land and property belonging to the Asare Bediako Senior High School.
These arrests reaffirms the government’s resolve to clamp down on galamsey and save the environment.
