A gunman opened fire inside a classroom at Brown University’s Barus and Holley engineering building on Saturday afternoon, killing two students and wounding nine others during the university’s final exams period.
The shooting occurred around 4 p.m. in the seven-story facility housing the School of Engineering and Physics Department on Hope Street. Authorities described the suspect as a man dressed in black who fled the scene on foot. Providence police released surveillance footage showing a person matching the description walking near campus, and as of early Sunday, a person of interest was in custody in connection with the incident, though details remain limited.
No weapon was recovered at the scene, officials confirmed.
Brown University President Christina Paxson issued a statement early Sunday, confirming all victims were students and calling the day one of “tremendous sorrow.”
“I can confirm that the nine members of our community who were transported to local hospitals are all students. And we lost two students to today’s devastating gun violence. Our hearts go out to them,” Paxson wrote on the university’s website. “This is a day of tremendous sorrow. No parent or family member should ever have to endure a day like this.”
She provided an update on the injured: six in critical but stable condition, one in critical condition, one in stable condition, and one already released from the hospital.
“Our full focus right now is on our community, their safety and providing support for the victims and their families,” Paxson added, noting she could not share further details about the victims at this time.
The campus remained on lockdown with a shelter-in-place order into early Sunday, though some restrictions were later lifted. More than 400 law enforcement officers, including local police, the FBI, and ATF, responded to the scene, offering investigative, tactical, and victim support.
FBI Boston confirmed its assistance, with personnel on site providing all necessary resources.

University officials are working to identify everyone present in the building, as multiple final exams were scheduled between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.
The incident marks a devastating event for the Ivy League institution, with the investigation ongoing.
