Baafi must apologise in parliament or resign – NDC’s Tanko Computer

Deputy National Elections Director of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Rashid Tanko Computer, has rejected an apology from New Juaben South MP Michael Okyere Baafi, demanding that the lawmaker either resigns or tenders a public apology on the floor of Parliament.

Mr Baafi reportedly apologised following the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the Akwatia by-election. But Tanko Computer insists the MP must be held to his own words.

“We are not accepting his apology. He must resign. If he doesn’t, Ghanaians will not take politicians seriously,” he told reporters. “You can’t just make categorical statements, promise to resign, and then within 24 hours withdraw it with an apology.”

Recalling events on election night, the NDC official said Baafi had projected confidence before the results were announced.

“He came in smiling and telling me they were winning until I showed him the results on my phone that he had lost. That was when he realised things had changed.”

Tanko Computer stressed that the MP’s resignation pledge cannot be ignored.

“The gentleman said, ‘I will resign.’ We will hold him to it. If he doesn’t, I will write to the Speaker of Parliament, so he is compelled to apologise publicly.

People like him must uphold decency in politics for Ghanaians to respect us.”
