Akwatia’s Member of Parliament-elect, Bernard Bediako Baidoo, has taken a swipe at former Vice President and NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, accusing him of failing to justify any development projects in the constituency during the campaign for the recent by-election.
Speaking on TV XYZ’s Dwaboase programme after his victory, Mr. Baidoo said the NPP’s defeat was a direct result of its poor record in Akwatia and lack of a compelling message to voters.
“To the extent that the former Vice President of the Republic, who was also in charge of development, could not point to a single project for Akwatia in the past eight years, tells you the whole story.
They had nothing to tell our people, so they resorted to blaming the NDC. That is why they were rejected,” he stated.
During the campaign, Dr. Bawumia alleged that the death of the late NPP MP, Ernest Kumi, was linked to stress from the NDC’s legal challenge to his 2024 victory. But Mr. Baidoo argued that such claims did not resonate with voters.
The NDC candidate secured 18,199 votes to defeat the NPP’s Solomon Kwame Asumadu, who garnered 15,235.
The loss is being described as a major setback for the NPP in its Eastern Region stronghold.
