BECE exam fraud: Kintampo court sentences four, remands several

Kintampo Magistrate Court has handed down sentences to four individuals found guilty of exam malpractice during the ongoing 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

While specific sentencing details were not disclosed publicly, sources confirm the convictions stem from mobile-phone-aided cheating and the use of unauthorized reports during exam halls.

In total, ten cases of malpractice have been reported so far nationwide: these include collusion, possession of illicit materials, impersonation, and the use of mobile phones to photograph questions.

WAEC transferred all suspects to police for further legal action. The ten include four who were convicted, and the others have been remanded to await trial.

The Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, John Kapi, warned these malpractices are criminal offenses under WAEC’s regulations and invited law enforcement to prosecute offenders.

Four individuals have been convicted and sentenced in Kintampo for examination malpractice, including the use of unauthorized materials and phone-based cheating during the BECE.

The remaining suspects part of a group of 10 arrested are currently on remand, awaiting trial.

Meanwhile, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the Ghana Education Service (GES) are intensifying efforts to curb exam misconduct, deploying supervisors and leveraging technology as part of ongoing preventive measures.

Authorities are now expected to issue official court or police statements detailing the sentences handed down in the exam malpractice cases.

Education stakeholders will also be monitoring updates from WAEC and the Ghana Education Service regarding any additional penalties or related prosecutions.

These convictions could set a precedent, potentially prompting stricter anti-malpractice measures in the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) cycle.
