Black stars matches blacked out as GTV fails to pay FIFA broadcast debt

Ghanaian football fans will miss out on watching the Black Stars’ Crucial World Cup qualifiers this week after state broadcaster GTV lost television rights over unsettled debts to FIFA.

GTV, which holds the exclusive rights to air the national team’s matches, has been cut off following its failure to clear outstanding payments from previous fixtures.

The blackout means there will be no live television coverage of Thursday’s away clash against Chad in N’Djamena or Monday’s decisive home tie against Mali at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The development has sparked outrage among supporters.

“This is unacceptable. The Black Stars are a national treasure, and every Ghanaian deserves to watch them without barriers,” one fan fumed.

Others described the situation as “embarrassing” and “a slap in the face” to loyal supporters.

With television access blocked, fans will have to rely on radio commentary or international streaming platforms, options many say are either inconvenient or too costly.

A Kumasi-based football analyst warned the fallout was more than a broadcasting hitch.

“This is not just a technical glitch; it’s a financial disgrace.

We can’t keep allowing money issues to interfere with national pride. Authorities must act swiftly to fix this and ensure it never happens again.”
