The GD Visionary Group Ltd., in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture and the National Commission on Culture, has officially launched the BlackStar Festival 2025, an ambitious initiative aimed at promoting Ghana’s rich cultural heritage on the global stage.
Under the theme “A Touch of Gold: Beyond the Return and Into the Future,” the festival builds on the legacy of landmark initiatives like The Year of Return and Beyond the Return, while charting a bold new course for future cultural engagement.
It seeks to preserve and project Ghana’s unique national identity through a blend of dynamic street festivals, traditional cuisine, compelling art, and authentic cultural expression, culminating in a grand celebratory gala.
Speaking at the launch event on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, at the Accra Tourist Information Centre, Executive Director of the National Commission on Culture, Mr. Wakefield Akuaku, emphasized the festival’s roots and vision.
“This Black Star Experience didn’t come from a vacuum; it is building on what was started earlier, since government is a continuum,” he stated.
“You all know of The Year of Return, Beyond the Return. Now we are building the BlackStar Experience into the future. We have seen the return, we have seen beyond the return, now we want to look into the future.”
Mr. Akuaku described the festival as a historic first and aligned it with President John Dramani Mahama’s cultural vision, specifically, The Black Star Experience, an annual flagship event to showcase Ghana’s customs and traditions to a global audience.
The launch ceremony was attended by dignitaries and diplomatic representatives, including the Nigerian Ambassador to Ghana, a representative from the Norwegian Embassy, and the Malaysian High Commissioner to Ghana.
The inaugural edition of the BlackStar Festival will take place in Washington, D.C., USA, from September 26 to 28, 2025, followed by a Ghana edition in October 2025.
