Chief of Staff courts teacher unions to back school farm initiative: “farming is innovation, not punishment”

Chief of Staff Julius Debrah has appealed to the Ghana Education Service (GES) and teacher unions at the pre-tertiary level to embrace the School Farm Initiative, describing it as a legacy project that combines education, agriculture, and youth empowerment.

Speaking at a consultative meeting ahead of the programme’s launch by the Presidential Initiative on Agriculture and Agribusiness at St. Thomas Aquinas Senior High School in Accra, Mr. Debrah stressed that the initiative should be viewed as a tool for development and posterity, not as an additional burden.

“We see it as a legacy project, one that ties together education, agriculture, and youth empowerment. School farms must not be seen as punishment but as foundations for tomorrow,” he said.

Mr. Debrah urged teacher unions including NAGRAT, GNAT, and CCT-GH to support the programme as a platform for mentoring students and instilling practical skills that extend beyond the classroom.

He further highlighted the pivotal role of the GES in integrating agriculture into teaching and learning, ensuring the sustainability of the initiative, and providing leadership at the institutional level.

“This vision seeks to move us from dependency to productivity, from subsistence to competitiveness, and from seeing agriculture as a last resort to embracing it as a modern, innovative enterprise,” he added.

The Chief of Staff assured stakeholders that the Presidential Initiative on Agriculture and Agribusiness will provide the enabling policies, logistical support, and national coordination required to make the School Farm Initiative successful.
