The Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) has confirmed repeated acts of sabotage targeting the reactivation of passenger services on the Kojokrom–Sekondi Railway Line, following the deliberate cutting of critical earthing and jumper cables on two Diesel Multiple Units (DMUs) undergoing restoration.
Since Thursday, 29 January 2026, GRDA’s technical team has been working diligently to repair and recommission the two DMUs stationed at Kojokrom as part of efforts to restore passenger services along the Sekondi–Takoradi–Kojokrom corridor. This exercise is part of GRDA’s broader strategy to revitalise rail transport within the Western Region.
According to GRDA management, repair works on DMU01 were successfully completed earlier this week, and the train was declared technically ready for testing with initial trial runs scheduled for Thursday, 5 February 2026.
However, during final pre-operational inspections on Wednesday, 4 February 2026, technicians discovered that the earthing cables and jumper cables had been deliberately severed into pieces.
The damage rendered the train inoperable, preventing the commencement of the planned trial runs.
The matter was immediately reported to the Western Regional Police Commander, and GRDA formally requested an enhanced security presence at Kojokrom Station to safeguard railway assets and protect ongoing restoration works.
Despite the setback, GRDA management instructed the engineering team to undertake urgent repairs on Thursday evening to restore the damaged systems.
Following the second round of repairs, the train was once again prepared for operational testing.
Shockingly, at approximately 5:00 a.m. on Saturday, 7 February 2026, the cables were found to have been deliberately cut for a second time.
GRDA has described the recurring incidents as persistent sabotage aimed at frustrating efforts to reactivate passenger rail services in the Western Region.
The matter has been reported again to the Western Regional Divisional Police Commander for urgent intervention and investigation.
In a statement, the Head of Corporate Affairs of GRDA indicated that the Authority remains resolute and will not be deterred by criminal acts intended to undermine national rail infrastructure development.
He emphasised that railway assets are strategic national investments, and acts of vandalism or sabotage constitute serious criminal offences under Ghanaian law.
GRDA has reiterated its commitment to restoring passenger services at Kojokrom–Sekondi and has called on the public to support efforts to protect railway infrastructure.
The Authority has also urged residents and stakeholders within the Western Region to volunteer credible information that may assist law enforcement agencies in identifying and prosecuting the perpetrators.
Management assured the public that additional security measures are being coordinated with the Ghana Police Service to prevent further interference with the rehabilitation works.
The reactivation of the Kojokrom–Sekondi passenger service is expected to significantly enhance mobility within the Sekondi–Takoradi metropolis, reduce road congestion, and provide a safe and affordable alternative mode of transport for commuters.
GRDA has confirmed that repair works will continue under reinforced security arrangements, with a revised schedule for trial operations to be communicated once the integrity of the rolling stock is secured.
