Ghana’s Minister of Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has confirmed that the Ministry is currently grappling with a staggering GH₵3.7 billion debt, a heavy burden affecting operational readiness and welfare across the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

With GH₵275 million owed to food suppliers who are threatening to withdraw services over arrears dating back to August 2023.

The remaining amount covers critical military needs, including equipment procurement and maintenance.

In public remarks, President Mahama and Vice President Opoku-Agyemang acknowledged the scale of the crisis, citing its impact on soldier welfare, operational readiness, and the over 17,000-unit housing deficit within the Ghana Armed Forces.

In response, the government has prioritized settling the arrears, approved a GH₵6.7 billion 2025 defence budget, and is revamping the efence Industries Holding Company (DIHOC) into a revenue-generating vehicle under the 24-Hour Economy agenda.

Further audits and reforms are planned to ensure transparency and financial sustainability, with a focus on boosting troop morale, upgrading infrastructure, and restoring operational capacity.
