President John Dramani Mahama has called on Ghanaians, particularly the youth, to safeguard the country’s democratic gains with courage and conviction.
Speaking at the presentation of the Democracy Cup by the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, at the Jubilee House on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, the President stressed that democracy must be treated as a continuous process rather than a one-off event.
“May the Democracy Cup remind us that democracy is not an event but a living process that we must all work to protect for future generations,” he said.
He urged the youth to take ownership of Ghana’s democratic journey, describing it as both an inheritance and a responsibility.
“To our youth, democracy is your inheritance, but it is also your responsibility. You must cherish and nurture it,” the President emphasized.
The Democracy Cup was introduced by Speaker Bagbin during the 8th Parliament to use football as a tool for civic engagement.
“By linking Parliament and football, we speak a language every Ghanaian understands,” the Speaker explained. He described the initiative as “a civic platform that brings Parliament closer to the people by harnessing the unifying, energizing, and cultural power of football to deepen trust in our democratic institutions.”
This year’s Democracy Cup match will see Accra Hearts of Oak face Accra Great Olympics at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium on Friday, September 5, 2025, at 3:00 p.m.
The curtain-raiser will feature a friendly between the Legislature and the Judiciary.
