The Chief Executive Officer of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Mr. Julius Neequayeh Kotey, reveals, the authority is facing crippling debts amounting to nearly $200 million and an additional GH¢300 million in local currency obligations.
Speaking on TV XYZ’s Gumbe Show, hosted by Oheneba Boama, Mr. Kotey attributed the debts to contracts signed under the previous administration.
He disclosed that as much as $51.8 million had already been committed to contracts spanning three years before the current government assumed office.
Beyond the debt burden, the DVLA boss exposed corruption practices within the organization, particularly at the country’s ports.
He alleged that some officials had been secretly selling DV plates to customs officers and agents.
In response, he said he had terminated the contracts of twelve companies implicated in the malpractice.
Mr. Kotey reaffirmed his commitment to sanitizing the DVLA and strengthening its operations, stressing that the authority cannot move forward without tackling corruption.
He also praised President John Dramani Mahama for his leadership potential, urging him to take bold action in the fight against corruption nationwide.
The revelations have triggered public concern over the DVLA’s financial management and raised questions about accountability within the Authority.
