ECG invests gh¢5m to stabilize power supply in Kumasi

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has completed a GH¢5.05 million project to stabilize electricity supply in Greater Kumasi, easing fears of a return to the crippling “dumsor” outages.

The investment saw the construction of new feeders at the Asekyem and Afari substations, part of a broader strategy to meet growing demand and end the erratic power supply that plagued the Ashanti Region earlier this year.

Eight months on, residents and businesses say reliability has improved dramatically.

Traders, assembly members, and households across Kumasi have commended ECG for responding swiftly to faults and restoring confidence in the system.

Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, acknowledged the turnaround, citing a sharp drop in complaints and attributing the progress to coordinated efforts between the Energy Ministry, ECG, and other sector players.

George Amoah, General Manager of ECG Ashanti West, credited the success to infrastructure upgrades and intensified maintenance.

A major breakthrough was the replacement of a faulty underground cable at the Ridge Bulk Supply Point with a higher-capacity line.

Special maintenance teams now patrol the network, clear vegetation, and address defects before they escalate.

Feeder lines once notorious for outages, including Magazine, Anomangye, Nkawie, and Kronum, have stabilized following reinsulating, reconductoring, and the replacement of aging equipment.

Projects are also underway in Barekese and Offinso, while a new feeder from Maase to Ahenkro is expected to benefit Namong, Tetrem, Kodie, and Mowire.

Mr. Amoah urged customers to use the ECG Power App or dial *226# to pay bills and report faults, reducing congestion at ECG offices.

He assured the public that ECG is committed to sustaining the gains and powering economic growth across Asanteman and beyond.
