Erik ten Hag sacked by Bayer Leverkusen after two bundesliga games

Bayer Leverkusen have sacked head coach Erik ten Hag after just two Bundesliga matches, ending his tenure less than a month after his appointment.

The former Manchester United boss was dismissed on Monday following a dramatic 3-3 draw against Werder Bremen, in which Leverkusen blew a 3-1 lead against 10 men.

His side had already lost their league opener to Hoffenheim, leaving the board unconvinced of his ability to steady the team.

“Assistant coaches will take temporary charge of training while the club works on appointing a new head coach,” Leverkusen confirmed in a statement.

Ten Hag’s reign began with a convincing 4-0 win in the DFB Pokal, but his Bundesliga campaign quickly unraveled. German media report that Monday’s training was delayed as officials informed him of his dismissal.

The decision comes amid major upheaval at the club. Former manager Xabi Alonso departed in the summer, followed by the exits of key players Florian Wirtz, Granit Xhaka, Lukas Hradecky, and Jonathan Tah, leaving Ten Hag to face a weakened squad and mounting expectations.

Leverkusen are expected to use the international break to name a permanent successor ahead of their next league game against Eintracht Frankfurt on September 12.

The dismissal leaves Ten Hag, out of work barely a month into the season and adds to the scrutiny over his managerial future after turbulent spells at both Manchester United and now in Germany.
