The Deputy CEO of the Minerals Commission, Emmanuel Kwamena Anyimah, has sounded a strong warning to illegal miners that the Mahama administration will make their operations difficult.
He said the time that they mined in river bodies and forest reserves was long gone, urging them to stop their illicit acts to save the environment.
Speaking on Accra-based Asampa FM, Anyimah, also known as Ellembelle KK, noted that the new government was poised to protect the environment through stringent measures.
“President John Mahama has said he will ensure the laws are amended to stop people from mining in forest reserves. He is committed to that,” he said.
“When President Mahama was campaigning for power, you heard him talk about fighting illegal mining (galamsey) to save our rivers and forests.”
Anyimah said forest reserves will be protected while the government encourages sustainable small scale mining.
“The natural resources we have in the country are for Ghanaians but they should be explored responsibly,” he added.
To him, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources Ministry headed by Emmanuel Armagh Kofi Buah will put measures in place to stop illegal mining in the country.
“President Mahama is committed to fighting illegal mining and that’s the reason he cautioned his appointees to desist from any form of mining,” he stated.
