Gender ministry extends support to families and community of Obogu tragedy

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection (MoGCSP), led by Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has extended urgent support and compassion to families and the wider community affected by the tragic incident at Obogu in the Asante Akim South Municipality, where 16 children lost their lives.

Since the incident, the Minister has taken decisive steps to assure the bereaved families of government’s solidarity.

She first dispatched a delegation to commiserate with the families through the Saviour Church, donating an undisclosed amount of financial support.

The Minister, accompanied by the Chief Director and a team of social workers, personally visited the families on multiple occasions to console them, provide further financial assistance, and settle hospital bills for surviving children who were hospitalized.

Recognising the deep trauma suffered, Dr. Lartey directed the Department of Social Welfare and Children to work with a psychologist from the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital to deliver continuous psychological counselling to the bereaved families.

As part of strengthening social protection systems in the area, the Minister also led a team from the Ghana National Household Registry (GNHR) to commence an enumeration exercise in the Asante Akim South Municipality.

The data collection forms part of the ongoing national scale-up of the GNHR database and the nationwide reassessment of the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme. The exercise will ensure accurate targeting of vulnerable households for social protection interventions.

Commending President John Dramani Mahama for his commitment to the welfare of vulnerable groups, especially children, Dr. Lartey assured the affected families that government will continue to strengthen social protection delivery so that “no vulnerable household is left behind.”

The Minister was accompanied by the Chief Director of the Ministry, Dr. Afisah Zakariah; the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Maame Sarfoah Appiah; and the Head of the GNHR, Dr. Richard Adjetey.
