Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has reaffirmed government’s commitment to positioning Ghana as Africa’s leading digital trade hub, anchored on innovation, sound policy, and strategic partnerships.
Delivering her address through her policy adviser, Dr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, at the opening of the National ICT Week Celebration in Accra, the Vice President highlighted Ghana’s stable democracy, trusted institutions, and resilient economy as strong foundations for driving Africa’s digital future.
This year’s three-day ICT Week, themed “Ghana as Africa’s Digital Trade Hub: Innovation, Policy, and Partnerships for the Future,” brought together policymakers, entrepreneurs, industry leaders, and innovators to map out strategies for digital transformation.
Dr. Ofosu Ampofo highlighted four flagship initiatives shaping Ghana’s digital transformation: the 24-Hour Economy Initiative to drive continuous productivity; the One Million Coders Project to train youth in software engineering for AfCFTA and global opportunities; the National Fiber-Optic Expansion to deliver high-speed connectivity across schools, hospitals, businesses, and rural areas; and the Ghana.Gov platform, a centralized online portal for key government services including passport applications, tax filing, and business registration.
He further noted Ghana’s distinction as the only African country with a fully interoperable instant payment system, an achievement that has accelerated mobile money adoption, e-commerce growth, and nationwide financial inclusion.
Dr. Ofosu Ampofo stressed that government alone cannot realize this vision, urging entrepreneurs, start-ups, telecom operators, fintech firms, banks, investors, development partners, and the Ghanaian diaspora to actively collaborate.
He also underscored the vital role of universities and vocational institutions in producing research, nurturing innovation, and equipping students with digital skills to sustain growth.
On governance, he reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to cybersecurity, data privacy, and cross-border trade standards through enforcement of the Data Protection Act and alignment with the AfCFTA’s Digital Trade Protocol.
“Ghana is ready. We have a stable democracy, a dynamic economy, bold initiatives, and modern infrastructure in motion. Yet, the real measure of success will be determined by what we accomplish together,” Prof. Opoku-Agyemang declared.
She called on innovators to keep pushing boundaries, investors to expand into Ghana’s digital market, and development partners to support transformative ventures, concluding with a rallying appeal to make Ghana the undisputed digital trade hub of Africa.
