Ghana police service vows to revamp investigative capabilities amidst declining trends

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tettey Yohonu, has expressed concern over a downward trend in police investigations, pledging to reverse the decline and strengthen the Ghana Police Service’s investigative capacity.

Addressing crime officers, the IGP emphasized that investigative work is central to the mandate of the service and urged officers to take collective responsibility in improving outcomes.

Speaking at the opening of the Regional Crime Officers’ Conference of the Police CID, themed “The Current Downward Trend of Police Investigations: The Role of Crime Officers”, he noted that the conference brought together resource persons to share best practices and experiences in criminal investigations.

IGP Yohonu highlighted key challenges facing investigators, including high caseloads, limited logistics, and increasingly sophisticated criminal methods.

He advised that the service organize internal training in forensic investigations, cybercrime, and financial crimes to enhance capacity.

He added that the service aims to modernize investigative approaches, strengthen collaboration with other units and stakeholders, and uphold professionalism and ethics, all to restore public confidence in the Ghana Police Service.
