The Ghana government has launched a new chip-embedded passport with enhanced security features, designed to prevent forgery and ensure seamless travel for citizens.
The new passport boasts a polycarbonate data page and incorporates advanced technologies such as nanotechnology and micro radio frequency identification (RFID).
Speaking at the launch, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa emphasized the importance of handling the new passport with care, warning against physical damage, exposure to heat, and liquids.
In a lighthearted moment, the minister also cautioned against using the passport for spiritual anointing, citing potential damage to the document’s security features.
Reverend Doctor Lawrence, present at the launch, has agreed to spread the word among religious leaders to handle the passports with care.
The new passport is part of a broader reform package aimed at improving service delivery and enhancing the travel experience for Ghanaians.
The government has also introduced a 24-hour hotline for feedback and concerns, demonstrating its commitment to transparency and accountability.
Citizens can now apply for the new passport online and track their application status in real-time.
The government has assured Ghanaians that the new passport will be delivered within 15 working days for regular applications and under 5 days for expedited services.
The launch marks a significant milestone in Ghana’s document security history, and the government is confident that the new passport will serve citizens well both at home and abroad.
GOVT APPROVES REDUCTION IN PASSPORT FEES
Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, also announced a cabinet-approved reduction in passport fees for ordinary applications from GH¢500 to GH¢350.
However, the reduction won’t take effect immediately, pending parliamentary approval to amend the Fees and Charges Act.
Speaking at rolling out of the “switching of Ghana passport to a chip Embedded event, Hon. Ablakwa emphasized the government’s commitment to making passports more accessible while maintaining high security standards.”
He assured the public that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has done its part, and now it’s up to Parliament to expedite the amendment process.
The reduction is part of the government’s efforts to address concerns about the affordability of passports, particularly following a significant price hike in 2024.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also announced plans to improve passport services, including extended operating hours and expedited processing.
