Ghana’s tourism sector attracts gh₵15.42 billion from international visitors – GSS releases first tourism baseline

Ghana’s tourism industry generated GH₵15.42 billion from international visitors between the fourth quarter of 2022 and the third quarter of 2023, according to new data from the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS).

The figures, released to mark World Tourism Day (September 27, 2025), represent the country’s first official baseline on international tourism and will serve as the foundation for Ghana’s inaugural Tourism Satellite Account (TSA).

The TSA will quantify tourism’s direct contribution to the economy, strengthening evidence-based planning and investment in the sector.

Launching the reports, Government Statistician Dr. Alhassan Iddrisu underscored tourism’s strategic role.

“Tourism is a driver of jobs, investment, and growth. These reports provide evidence to shape policies, attract private sector partnerships, and strengthen Ghana’s position as a leading tourism destination,” he said.

A new tourism report shows that Ghana received 901,448 international visitors, with overnight travellers making up 98.6% of arrivals.

Same-day visitors spent GH₵24 million, while overnight visitors generated GH₵15.18 billion.

Popular sites included Cape Coast Castle, Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, Bisa Abrewa Museum, Independence Square, the Arts Centre, and the National Museum.

Same-day visitors were mostly West African transit passengers, while overnight travelers, mainly men aged 36–64, came primarily to visit friends and relatives, followed by business and leisure trips.

The report recommends promoting short-stay packages, expanding accommodation, improving facilities and digital platforms, and strengthening cross-border tourism.

The GSS said the data closes a longstanding gap in Ghana’s tourism statistics and provides a framework for policymakers, industry stakeholders, and investors to drive growth in one of the country’s fastest-emerging sectors.
