Government reaffirms commitment to strengthening school feeding programme

The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has reiterated government’s commitment to improving the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP) to enhance nutrition and boost enrollment in basic schools.

Speaking during a spot check at selected schools in the Ledzokuku and Krowor Municipalities on Thursday, September 4, 2025, the Minister said the initiative remains central to government’s education and social protection agenda.

Dr. Lartey inspected food distribution, caterer attendance, and meal quality, expressing satisfaction with caterers’ performance during the first week of school resumption.

She, however, warned that contractors who fall short of required standards would face sanctions.

“We will continue to conduct surprise visits across the country to see for ourselves how caterers are performing.

Those who fail to meet the required standards will face sanctions,” she stressed.

The Minister also disclosed that government is considering reviewing the feeding grant upward from GHS2 to GHS5 per child as the economy strengthens.

She was accompanied by national and regional coordinators of the GSFP, as well as municipal executives.

Schools visited included Field Engineer ‘A’ and ‘B’ Basic Schools in Ledzokuku and the Nungua Kroma Cluster of Schools in Krowor.

Launched in 2005, the GSFP provides one hot meal daily to pupils in public basic schools.

It has been described as a crucial intervention to improve child nutrition, support local farmers, and drive school enrollment nationwide.
