Greater Accra minister gives MMDCEs two weeks to fix streetlights

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, has issued a two-week ultimatum to all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the region to repair broken streetlights in their jurisdictions or face sanctions.

Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Thursday, August 28, Madam Ocloo announced that her office, in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy, had secured 3,000 streetlights for distribution across the assemblies, with each MMDA receiving 100 units.

She, however, directed local authorities to procure additional lights to ensure adequate coverage in all communities.

“Let me be clear, you have two weeks only to ensure that every single one of those lights is fixed. No excuses, no delays. I will personally monitor this directive, and any chief executive who fails to comply will be exposed and reported. If you cannot manage these basic tasks, then you have no business occupying that office,” she warned.

The Minister also pointed to poor sanitation, inadequate street lighting, and the proliferation of illegal billboards as clear signs of neglect by some assemblies.

“At this stage, excuses are nothing but an embarrassment to the people we serve.

Leadership is not about perks but about delivering results, and right now many of you are simply sleeping on your jobs,” she added.

She stressed that functional streetlights are not only critical to urban order and public safety but also a key enabler of government’s 24-hour economy policy.
