GTA CEO leads breast cancer awareness and health screening exercise

The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has organised a Breast Cancer and General Health Screening Exercise at its head office in Accra as part of efforts to promote health awareness and early detection of diseases among its staff and stakeholders to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Chief Executive Officer of the Authority, Mrs. Maame Efua Houadjeto, reflects her continued commitment to promoting awareness about breast cancer and encouraging preventive healthcare, especially among women.

The exercise brought together GTA staff and key stakeholders for free breast cancer screening and general health checks, including eye examinations, blood pressure monitoring, and other vital assessments.

Addressing participants, Mrs. Houadjeto emphasised the importance of regular health checks and early detection, noting that breast cancer can affect anyone, regardless of background or lifestyle.

“As it stands now, we do not know the exact cause of breast cancer. Everybody comes with a different story, but what remains true is that early detection saves lives,”

She added passionately, “Women, we need you. We cannot afford to let cancer take you away from us.”

During the event, Mrs. Houadjeto pledged the Authority’s support for Aunty Comfort Owusu, a former GTA staff member and breast cancer survivor, who has launched an initiative to support women in their fight against the disease.

“We stand in solidarity with survivors like Aunty Comfort, whose courage inspires others to fight and win. The GTA will continue to support initiatives that promote women’s health and empowerment,” Mrs. Houadjeto assured.

Sharing her journey, Aunty Comfort Owusu expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Ghana Tourism Authority for its continued encouragement and support.

She urged women not to ignore warning signs or delay medical consultations, stressing that timely diagnosis is key to successful treatment.

“Do not take things lightly. If you feel any unusual changes, go to the doctor immediately. Early detection is everything,” she advised.

The Ghana Tourism Authority continues to demonstrate its commitment to staff well-being through periodic health campaigns and awareness programmes.

This initiative aligns with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, observed globally every October, to raise awareness, support survivors, and advocate for preventive care.

The event concluded with health professionals offering personalised consultations and educational materials on maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
