The Member of Parliament for Asunafo North, Haruna Mohammed, popularly known as BA, has raised strong concerns over persistently high fares for goods and services despite recent improvements in Ghana’s economic indicators.
Speaking in a one-on-one interview with Piesie Okrah on Dwaboase on Power 97.9 FM and TV XYZ on Thursday, December 11, 2025, the MP said many drivers and business owners continue to impose unjustifiably high charges.
“Exchange rates and inflation have dropped significantly, yet some drivers and business owners continue to charge exorbitantly. There is too much indiscipline everywhere, and it is unacceptable,” he stated.
Mr. Mohammed called on the government to adopt stronger regulatory measures to protect consumers from arbitrary price hikes.
“The regulatory bodies must be strengthened and empowered by the state to ensure continuous monitoring of trotro drivers against outrageous fare charges.
It is important that commuters are treated fairly and that public transport operates within reasonable and regulated fare structures,” he said.
The MP also highlighted ongoing reforms within the transport sector. He revealed that Metro Mass Transit (MMT) is set to receive 200 new buses to replace its aging fleet, an intervention he says will significantly improve efficiency, reliability, and comfort in intercity travel.
“Once these new buses are operational, passengers can expect smoother, safer, and more reliable transport services across the country,” he added.
His comments come as commuters continue to complain about rising transportation costs, which many say are affecting their daily budgets and increasing the overall cost of doing business.
Mr. Mohammed’s call for stronger regulation underscores the need for accountability and discipline within the transport sector to ensure that the benefits of economic stability are felt by ordinary Ghanaians.
