New Juaben South MP Michael Okyere Baafi has announced that he will not seek re-election in 2028, ending months of speculation over his political future after his unfulfilled vow to resign if the New Patriotic Party (NPP) lost the Akwatia by-election.
Baafi, who first made headlines with the promise during a live interview on GHOne TV ahead of the September 2, 2025 poll, had declared: “If the NPP loses this Akwatia by-election, I will resign as MP. Mark my words.”
When the NPP candidate was defeated by Bernard Bediako of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Baafi did not step down, sparking criticism and accusations of dishonesty.
The controversy dogged him for months, with many Ghanaians demanding accountability.
In a recent post shared by Asaase Radio, widely seen as sympathetic to the NPP, Baafi finally addressed the issue, confirming that while he will serve out his term until January 2029, he will not contest the 2028 general elections.
Sources close to the MP say Baafi has privately expressed regret over the resignation pledge, describing it as a hasty remark made under political pressure during a heated campaign.
The decision effectively signals the end of his parliamentary career after two terms, closing a chapter marked by both influence in government and controversy in the public eye.
