KNUST SHS scandal: child abusers must face the law – Veep

Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has unequivocally condemned the heinous acts of child abuse and gender-based violence, stressing that perpetrators must be prosecuted and face the full weight of the law.

Her remarks follow the circulation of a disturbing video showing the Assistant Headmaster of KNUST Senior High School in a compromising situation with a 13-year-old student, a case that has triggered nationwide outrage and concern.

Gender Minister Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey has assured the public that her ministry is working with the Ghana Police Service to secure the arrest of the Assistant Headmaster, who has since been dismissed by the school.

The Vice President lamented the abuse of power by some men in authority, emphasizing the need for accountability and stronger public education.

“This has happened; it’s not good news, and it’s also a question of power. Some of us are not paying attention to the nature of responsibility entrusted to us, not only in schools but also in workplaces. Public education is important, and holding people to account is also very important,” Professor Opoku-Agyemang stated.

During her visit to the Gender Ministry, the Vice President was briefed on ongoing initiatives addressing gender and children’s issues.

Dr. Lartey highlighted the recent increase in the school feeding grant from GH₵1.50 to GH₵2.00 per child, noting improvements in quality and confirming that caterers are no longer owed arrears.

The Vice President also launched the 2025 Breast Cancer Awareness Month and joined in commemorating the International Day of Older Persons.

She urged women to prioritise regular breast check-ups, underscoring that early detection saves lives.

“Women should continually check their breasts. Early detection saves lives,” she emphasized.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang assured the Gender Minister and her team of government’s firm commitment to supporting efforts to combat child abuse, gender-based violence, and other pressing social issues.
