Lordina Mahama Foundation gifts NKORANZA Health Center a 40-bed ultra modern Maternity and Children’s ward

The Lordina Mahama Foundation has commissioned and handed over a 40-bed ultra modern maternity and Children’s ward to the Nkoranza Health Center in the Bono East region.

The facility is equipped with modern medical equipment and furniture, including incubators, ultrasound machines, surgical beds, a neonatal care unit, phototherapy units, a sterilization room, and nurses’ workstation among others.

The Maternity and Children’s ward, which is one of the best so far to be added since the creation of the new region, will help improve access to care and reduce maternal and child deaths in the Nkoranza township and adjoining communities.

The 70-year old Health Center, until the latest addition was struggling to cope with the increasing number of patients and the poor state of only two makeshift delivery wards, a reason for the plea to the former First Lady, who is a citizen of the area for support.

Speaking at the commissioning, Mrs. Lordina Mahama indicated that the gesture forms part of her commitment to ensuring a safe and better environment for all.

The support is expected to provide comprehensive maternal and neonatal care to the people of Nkoranza and surrounding communities.

“It is wrong for a woman to die in the process of giving birth to life. Unfortunately, more women die during the process of childbirth in Ghana and Africa than in other parts of the world” she noted

The Lordina Foundation has been dedicated to supporting maternal and child healthcare, education, and women’s empowerment for over two decades.

The foundation has been instrumental in supporting maternal and child healthcare by supplying medical equipment and other supplies, refurbishing, and now building brand-new maternity and children’s wards in underserved communities.
The Foundation also engages in charitable activities, distributing educational and other materials including food items to those in need.

The ceremony was witnessed by traditional leaders, medical staff, and residents of Nkoranza.

A deputy Regional Health Director in charge of Clinical care Madam Hellen Agbodzo in appreciation said the facility is one of the best in the region and medical doctors and specialists will be posted immediately to assist health care delivery.

Flagbearer of the NDC, John Maham in his inaugural speech emphasized the need for collaboration between government, healthcare professionals, and the community to ensure the facility’s success.

Mr Mahama thanked donors, benefactors, and individuals who contributed to the project’s execution.

In Africa, maternal and child health remains a critical issue. Each year, two hundred and sixty-five thousand (265,000) women die from childbirth complications and 1.2 million children do not live to see their first month.

Ghana’s maternal mortality which stands at 310 deaths is far higher than the less than 70 recommended by the Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs).
